With the recruiting / club season fast upon us, I’ve had the ‘great’ fortune (or misfortune) of traveling repeatedly to many playing sites. I have ventured out from the ordinary restaurants to find some of the extraordinary places to put a little pep in my 15 hour day step.
As you may have guessed, our family enjoys eating good healthy food. Even for travels with the volleyball team during season, we look for local and organic places, if possible (both in the area and financially). Good food, is good food. It tastes great and makes you feel better. Food is medicine.
Following are some of my healthy food staples for traveling to the Great Lakes Volleyball Center for the Power League tournaments:
Fire It Up
What started as a food truck has now turned restaurant. A ‘Taco Fusion’ grill that offers local and organic ingredients.
1523 N Aurora Rd #107, Naperville, IL 60563
Quick in and out for lunch between waves.
Think Whole Foods on healthy steroids. Their grill is over the top and you won’t empty your whole paycheck.
1508 Aurora Ave, Naperville, IL 60540
Great spot for a quick meal plus snack food to take along to get you through the long morning wave.
There is, of course, a Sweet Tomatoes close-by that is a quick fix all you can eat salad bar, a Vitamin Shoppe across the street, and I’d be an unfaithful Chicagoan if I didn’t mention the unhealthiest of restaurants: Portillos, Lou Malnati’s Pizza, and Buffalo Joe’s Wings in Evanston.
I look forward to learning from others their favorite spots and bon appetit!
