Last night, at the USAV Open Nationals here in Minneapolis, Team Paul Mitchell defeated Team BC 3 – 0 in the finals to win the Men’s Championship. This is a three-peat for Team Paul Mitchell. On the women’s side, the University of Washington defeated USA’s A2 Blue Team, 3 – 0. Proving that a good team with chemistry, a team system, and a familiarity of movement on the court will defeat a team of great athletes. The USA A2 Teams started training together on May 18th in Minneapolis. It is not nearly enough time to incorporate a true team system, defensive schemes, or any real chemistry. The New York Yankees, in many respects are an all-star team, has great athletes, but lack consistent chemistry to win the World Series more frequenty.
The matches were lack-luster last night, both going 3 – 0. Team Paul Mitchell, comprised primarily of ex-Long Beach State players, taught Team BC a lesson as Team BC is a juniors Canadian Team. It is rumored that Team Paul Mitchell has been practicing and scrimmaging in the USA Men’s Olympic facility. With Alan Knipe, ex-Long Beach State Head Coach, now the Men’s USA National Team Coach, it will be interesting to see how many players from Team Paul Mitchell will play on USAV National Team.
The crowd for the men’s championship match was standing room only, and the women had an almost full capacity. It was a great tournament and volleyball still deserves more recognition.
